YOUTH FLEET SAILING PROGRAM
I have agreed to head up the Youth Fleet Program this year. With the help of Walt Mintkeski, I hope to build on the groundwork that he has worked hard to establish since his efforts began in 2003.
Although I have only been here for less than one year, I have found the Willamette Sailing Club to be the meeting point for racing small boats in the Portland area. The Youth Fleet Sailing Program will focus on instilling the love of sailing and the thrill of competition in the junior sailors that participate.
Please call or e-mail me with any suggestions that you may have to make this sailing program the best there is.
Thank you,
Dave Moran

2008 YOUTH FLEET SAILING PROGRAM
All Willamette Sailing Club (WSC) members from the ages of 8 through 18 who want to learn and improve racing skills in Optis, Lasers, and 420's are encouraged to participate. The prerequisites for participation in the program are: earning a Cadet certificate through the Willamette Sailing School Classes, or current participation in the High School Sailing Program and recommendation by the coaches. This is a "learn to race" program, which assumes participants already feel comfortable sailing a one person boat and are interested in advancing to racing.
The Program consists of the following two sessions:
Summer Session I: Weeks of June 24 - July 24
Summer Session II: Weeks of July 29 - August 28
Both sessions consist of 5 weeks of Tuesday and Thursday evening sailing. Tuesdays are primarily on-the-water instruction in racing techniques. Thursdays are racing practice. Boats will include Laser, Laser Radial, Opti, and 420's. Opti and beginning Laser sailors will practice from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, and 420 and advanced Laser sailors will practice from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.
Participants are encouraged to use their own boats, but Club boats are available to charter on a first come, first served basis for each night of the program.
Fees are $50 per session plus $40 per session if you charter a Club Opti, Laser, or 420. Fees will be added to WSC Club bills at the end of Summer Session II.
