Getting started in High School Sailing

Sailing is now a club sport opportunity for all Portland area high school students! The program has two sessions: Fall (10 weeks starting Sept. 10, 2007) and Spring (15 weeks starting Feb. 20, 2008). We practice every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after school on the Willamette River and compete with other high school teams from throughout the Northwest on weekends. Boats (double-handed Club 420s and single-handed Lasers) and US Sailing-certified coaching are provided by the Willamette Sailing Club.

Enrollment is open to students of all Portland area high schools, public as well as private, but limited to 30 students. Previous sailing experience is not required, but participants must be able to swim, commit to regular practices, and provide their own life jackets and cold weather clothing. Parents are expected to share in the volunteer duties at weekly practices or weekend regattas.

Coaches

We are extremely fortunate to have two of the very best coaches available in the Northwest! Meet Bill Symes and George Yioulos.
